LASIK Technology at McMann Eye Institute |
|
Understanding the technology your
surgeon uses may mean the difference between
20/20 or better vision vs. something else.
Laser eye surgery technology has been around
since 1997. Since then, the technology and
techniques have advanced, which means better
outcomes for patients. To achieve the best
vision possible, you should chose the best
surgeon using the best technology. Since McMann
Eye Institute is privately owned, Dr. McMann is
free to choose the best technology for his
patients and he has purchased the most advanced
LASIK laser on the market.
To date, Dr. McMann has performed surgery on over 10,000 patients and 1/3 of those patients were in the US Military. Dr. McMann uses the WaveLight® EX500 Excimer Laser system, which produces results of 20/20 or better vision for over 90 percent of his patients.
The First Step: Microkeratome vs. Blade Free
LASIK
Dr. McMann uses the Zyoptix XP
Microkeratome for the corneal flap creation step of
LASIK. Some doctors will tell you that using a laser
during this step is a better option. When the laser is
used, it creates a series of small bubbles beneath the
surface. Then the surgeon must peel back the flap in a
manner much like separating velcro. This causes slight
trauma to the cells of the eye and can take longer to
heal. The microkeratome creates a clean separation of the
tissue, which results in shorter healing times after
your procedure.
The Second Step: The
Excimer Laser
The excimer laser is
responsible for reshaping the cornea. Earlier excimer
lasers achieved startling results, but they were
occasionally accompanied by compromised night vision and
their technical limitations meant that a much higher
percentage of prospective patients were not considered
good candidates. This prevented many would-be LASIK
patients from enjoying the benefits of clear, natural
lens free vision.
Dr. McMann uses the most
advanced laser on the market today, the WaveLight® EX500 Excimer Laser system.
The WaveLight® EX500 Excimer Laser system allows Dr. McMann
to provide a unique treatment for each eye
through mapping thousands of data points -
giving a fully detailed three dimensional
picture of you cornea's shape and
characteristics.
Utilizes an infrared video eye tracking system
so if your eye jumps or moves during the
procedure, the laser will pause until your eye
is back in alignment.
The WaveLight® EX500 Excimer Laser system uses flying
spot technology to treat nearsightedness,
farsightedness, and astigmatism. Providing
outstanding clinical outcomes in U.S. FDA
clinical trials, the WaveLight® EX500 Excimer Laser system features a proven custom ablation
algorithm with over 100,000 procedures performed
worldwide.
